The difficult post-war period gradually began to lighten a little in 1949. The 100th anniversary of Ernst Leitz GmbH arrived at a fitting moment – and was celebrated together with the entire workforce in August. Reflecting on the company’s remarkable evolution and the harrowing years they had endured together, the anniversary became an emotional milestone – shifting from widespread relief to a collective sense of hope for the future.

As personal freedom began to reclaim its place within society, photography embraced a resurgence of artistic freedom. Andreas Feininger, one of its prominent advocates, began exploring his expressive curiosity with remarkable technical precision from an early age. His photograph “The Photojournalist” deftly unites these two dimensions, offering a precise depiction of the profession – balancing intimacy with restraint. His way of artfully conveying facts characterized the journalism of the time on a worldwide scale and helped photography on its way to becoming an art form in its own right.
